Trade Links

Get website traffic (website visitors) by trading links

If you are no good at writing articles (as talked about in the next section) then trading links is the best method. And if you are good at writing articles then trading links is the second best method. Not only is it important to do this to get traffic in, it also helps improve your link popularity, so improves the results you get from the search engines.

Basically there are two ways of going about this. Firstly, and most easily, you can visit websites and look for for a "trade links" page, then sign up. This can be time consuming because only a few sites have link trade pages, the majority don't.

If you use this method, you must have a link to the other site up before applying. Most webmasters have software that checks this before telling them about your link request, if their link is not on your site they probably will not even get your link exchange request.

The second method is to email webmasters and ask if they want to trade links. Be careful if you do this, don't make th email sound like spam (because technically it is) and don't be disappointed if they just ignore you (less than 10% will reply, and most of those will simply reply to say "F*** off and stop spamming me"). This takes some perseverance and requires a thick skin. If you are a sensitive person and cannot take rejection and constant insults stick to method one.

You may also come across the term A/B links. These are even better, but rarer than rocking horse shit. The idea is that when a webmaster has two (or more) sites he gets you to link to one of them only, then he puts a link to your site on the other one. This is better because reciprocal links (where each site has a link back to the other) do not score as highly as unique links (ones where there is no return link on the domain).

Now you may be thinking "where do I find websites to trade with?" Well, ever heard of Google? Or Yahoo? There are millions (probably billions) of websites listed on each of those. Search for sites that would interest the same people who your site will interest, but is not in direct competition with you (for example, if you have a site selling eBooks for people with websites, look for other sites that would interest webmasters, such as sites selling website traffic).

When you start you may find this a little daunting, searching thousands of sites to get a few dozen links (and several hundred "F*** off arsehole" type replies). Yes it is a long, boring job, but you have a website, you can make millions in your lifetime from it (at least you can if you bought it from me, there are a few available from other people that are about as much use as a chocolate teapot, such as those awful "Amazon affiliate" type sites). Do you expect making millions will be as easy as making a cup of tea? You want the money, you got to put in the work.

A quick note to those of you who did buy your site from me and are thinking "But my site does not have a link list page." I no longer put them on as standard because I found that over 90% of my clients never used them, and an empty links page looks bad, it can even scare away customers. When you have at least one link to add to your site, let me know and I'll add your links page and re-activate the control panel that lets you add links to it.

OK, that's it, now get out there and find those links.

This column's layout and style was stolen from JW Throat. Well I give him a lot of help on his site, it is about time he returned the favour.

25 September
As you will have noticed I did not manage to get an update in before my holiday. And since I got back I have been too buisy with the backlog of work that built up while I was gone to write anything here. But today, at last, I have uploaded something.

However it is probably not what you hoped for. Read the section numbered "0" and called "Start Here", you probably won't like it, but you need to hear it.

22 August
Four new pages this time, but one is very short. They are on pages 11, 12, 13, and 14 in the index to the left.

Yet again I am away over the weekend - I should actually have left an hour ago, so do not expect the next uopdate until near the end of next week. (Although it is a bank holiday, sadly my trip is work related once more.)

17 August
Two new pages this week one on social networking and one on email signatures. They are on pages 9 and 10 in the index to the left.

Hopefully I'll add another page or two during the week, but I am away again next weekend (once more it is work related) so I may not have the time.
